Some useful guidelines to work out the steel quantity from drawing

Prior to construct any RCC structure, it is required to work out the steel quantity from drawings for purchasing purpose.

The following steps are involved to calculate the quantity of steel :-

1. Obtain The Number Of Steel Bars:

Initially, it is necessary to count the total numbers of steel bars from the drawing.

When counting is started, obtain the number of equivalent size bars.

Assume, the drawing of a structure contains both 10mm and 12mm diameter bar, it is required to count both sizes of bars independently.

It should also be remembered that there exist various length of bars in your drawing. Therefore, the similar length bars should be counted jointly.

As for instance, if there are both 10 feet and 12 feet long bars in your drawing, count the 10 feet long bars and 12 feet long bars independently.

2. Obtain The Length Of Bars

Obtain the length of a bar from the drawing and multiply the length with the number of bars already counted in step #1 to have the total length of similar size bars.

3. Obtain The Weight Of Bars

Steel bars are found in the market as weight like kilogram or Ton.

Therefore, it is required to change the length of the bars into the weight.

The calculation can be done by applying the following formulas :-

1. Obtain The Number Of Steel Bars: Number of bars = {(width of footing ? 2 ? clear cover) ? Spacing of bars} + 1

2. Obtain The Length Of Bars: Length of a bar = Length of footing ? 2 ? clear cover + 2 ? end hook

3. Work out The Weight Of Steel Bars: Weight of steel bars = Length of bars ? unit weight

To work out the steel quantity from drawing for neck column, the following formula should be used:-

Number of stirrups = (Clean height of column ? spacing of stirrups) + 1
