The Bituminous Roofing System - Its Types & Advantages & Disadvantages

In order to enhance the weather ability of ModBit Systems, manufacturers surface the cap sheets with mineral granules. As a result, the roof will perform better for a longer period of time, reducing the building's energy costs and long-term maintenance fees.

They use cool roof coatings and granules to reflect UV rays. Making your home more fire-safe may require you to add smoke vents to its roof. Some of the major benefits of Bitumioun's roofing systems are their high level of resistance to physical damage, low maintenance, easy installation, energy efficiency, and much more.

Distillation of crude petroleum produces a solid or semisolid, black, sticky, ductile substance called bitumen. Hydrocarbons and organic matter make up bitumen, which is typically a mixture of hydrocarbons and organic matter. The fluid form is petroleum, the semi-fluid form is mineral tar, and the solid form is asphalt.

Types of Bituminous Roofing System

BUR or built-up roofing is a type of bituminous roofing, while polymer-modified bitumen is a multi-ply system.

Modified Bituminous Roofing

Water penetration is controlled by the cap sheet and base piles of this modified bituminous roofing system. In order to extend the weathering ability of the cap sheet surfaces, mineral granules are added.

Similar to BUR Systems, ModBit System possesses a cap sheet and base ply that provide reliable waterproofing. Modbit Systems can also be customized extensively by roofing contractors, ensuring they meet their specific requirements.

Cool roof coatings and granules are used to reflect UV rays, thereby improving the roof's durability and reducing the building's energy consumption.

Merits

  • Making sure quality is maintained.
  • The installation process is made easy.
  • A preventative measure applies against water intrusion.
  • A strong wind won't blow it over.
  • It maintains structural integrity at low temperatures.
  • Make construction waste less wasteful.

Demerits

  • When the weather gets hot, it absorbs too much heat.
  • Compared to single-ply systems, most common application methods still carry a higher risk.
  • The cost of modifying a bit can be higher.
  • Ponding resistance is lower than that of thermoplastics.

Built up Roofing

Many contractors in the world have been using Build up Roofing Systems for decades because of their reliability and efficiency. As part of the system, bitumen coated membranes alternate with oxidized bitumen known as ply sheets or felt.

You could use a fiberglass mat that is firmly stable and of high tensile strength to support the ply sheets. In addition to the roof coating, manufacturers also add aggregate to improve the weatherproofing of the system.

Since the roofing system is multi-layered, it is waterproof, which means that it will last for many years to come.

SBS Membrane

There are two primary types of bituminous membranes available on the market today: APP and SBS. Though both are bituminous membranes, APP is a polymer-modified bitumen membrane, and ModBit System is a bituminous membrane modified with a polymer.

SBS membranes, which are made from polymers of Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene and bitumen, are currently available in the market. A rubbery asphalt coating is applied to the surface.

For high tensile strength and dimensional stability, roofing contractors apply the coating to fiberglass reinforcing carriers. Alternatively, polyester provides superior elongation and tear strength or a combination of the two.

You can learn more about the benefits of SBS membranes, especially during the winter months. Roofers usually use cold adhesives or mopping asphalt to install it, as it is also self adhering.

Define APP Membrane

Atactic Polypropylene polymers are used in the polymer modified bitumen membrane to achieve higher temperatures, better durability, and toughness.

Polyester carrier mats are commonly coated with the coating, but fiberglass products are also available. As a result of the plasticized bitumen, most contractors apply APP membranes via torch.
