Details about steel in column

Given below, the detail information about the steel bars provided in column and column base.

1. Main Bars: Main bars are utilized in column towards width and height.

Based on the load provided, these Steel bars are designed. These bars are arranged with a diameter of 5 mm to 50 mm ( 2?to 3/8?).

The concrete cover is arranged at the base under the steel bars from 7 to 10 cm (2.5 to 4 inches).

2. Longitudinal Bars: Longitudinal bars are arranged in vertical direction in the column.

For the columns with square and rectangular shapes, the number of longitudinal bars should be 4. If the shape is circular, the number of longitudinal bars should be 6.

The concrete cover is retained around 2 to 3 cm in columns otherwise concrete cover is retained identical to the diameter of the steel bars.

The diameter of steel bars is retained roughly 5 mm to 50 mm according to the load enforcing on the column.

3. Stirrups: Stirrups belong to the rings which are provided around the steel bars in some space with the purpose of saving them from buckling.

Pitch refers to the distance among the centers of two rings or stirrups in a circular column. This distance is maintained in accordance with the load and structure design.

Otherwise it should be identical to twelve times of the diameter of the slightest longitudinal bar applied in the column.

However, the dimension of the pitch should not be raised in excess of 30 centimeters (12 inches).

For a column with circular shape, uninterrupted steel wire is covered around the steel bars rather than rings or stirrups.

This wiring is defined as Helical Binding.

The pitch of helical binding should not be under 3 times of its diameter and should not surpass 1/6 of the diameter of the column.
