How to work out the cutting length of stirrups with different shapes
In this civil engineering video tutorial, you will learn how to determine the cutting length of stirrups in column with rectangular, triangular and single hook shape.
The calculation is done based on the following dimensions :-
Clear cover = 40 mm
The diameter of main bar = 20 mm
The diameter of stirrups = 8 mm
Calculation for rectangular stirrups.
The vertical exterior to exterior part is taken as a & the horizontal exterior to exterior part is taken as b.
The horizontal length of concrete = 400 mm
The vertical length of concrete = 600 mm
a = 400 ? (2 x clear cover)
= 400 ? (2 x 40) = 320 mm
b = 600 ? (2 x clear cover)
= 600 ? (2 x 40) = 520 mm
Cutting length = (2 x a) + (2 x b) + (Hook) ? (Bend)
= (2 x 320) + (2 x 520) + (2 x 10d) ? (3 x 2d) ? (2 x 3d)
= (2 x 320) + (2 x 520) + (2 x 10 x 8) ? (3 x 2 x 8) ? (2 x 3 x 8)
= 1744 mm or 1.744 m
Calculation for single hook stirrups:
The length = 400 mm
a = 400 ? (2 x clear cover)
= 400 ? (2 x 40) = 320 mm
Cutting length = a + (Hook) ? (Bend)
= 320 + (2 x 10d) ? (2 x 3d) = 432 mm
