Analyzing Completed Estimates

Construction cost estimators should develop methods for analyzing completed estimates to confirm that they are reasonable. If it is detected that the estimate has crossed the normal range of costs for similar projects, then research must be conducted to detect the reasons for the possible error. Post bid estimates should also be analyzed in detail, to locate the hidden cause for the failure of the bidding process. A calculation should be done of the variations of the estimate from low bid and low average bids.

Cost estimators should also determine from different outside sources to note whether there were subcontract or material bids provided only to specific bidders or not. It must also be decided upon whether bids were submitted by a representative number of contractors for the standard of construction quality expected or not. They should also determine whether the low bidder might have made omissions in the estimate or not. After the analysis is complete, construction cost estimators should always properly document the derived information for future reference and guidance. Thorough and precise analyzing completed estimates allows in preventing similar estimation errors in future projects.

Including all the estimating procedures that permit conversion of the estimate to field cost systems assists the management to monitor and control field activities. The entire process incorporates methods of reporting field costs for problem areas. It is helpful to develop daily or weekly reports till the project is complete. When field cost reporting is consistent with the estimation process, it helps estimators to apply the gained relevant knowledge for future reference.
