CONSTRUCTION ESTIMATING NEWS (update by every month)
George Brown tops at TCA student bid challenge
When Michael Calisti’s team at MIGA Constructors submitted its bid for the construction of Raccoon City College A Wing, he was concerned the cost estimate was unsound.
So he was shocked to find out it varied only $5,000 from the $13.649 million target and his team was awarded prizes in two separate categories.
“When I handed in our price, I didn’t have any confidence in it, to be honest. I thought we were going to be way high or way low,” Calisti said.
“But it worked out, I guess.”
Raccoon City College is not a real project, though it’s based on an extension at Conestoga College. Calisti and his teammates are actually third-year construction management students at George Brown College in Toronto. They collected $1,000 each in two separate prize categories in the Simulated Student Bid Competition, an annual event led by The Construction Institute of Canada, which is affiliated with the Toronto Construction Association (TCA) and provides professional development services.
