Brief overview of steel reinforcement

In reinforcement concrete structure, steel reinforcement is one of the very important components. Steel is designed in such a manner that steel and concrete function jointly to resist induced force on RC structures.

The thermal expansion properties of steel and concrete are almost same up to a noticeably high temperature. The steel contains outstanding bendability property and it has good strength to resist tensile load.

In normal reinforced concrete structures, the steel bars applied as reinforcement are called as passive reinforcement or rebars. In pre-stressed concrete structures, the reinforcement (steel wires) are stressed before the load is employed on the structures. It is observed as active reinforcement.

Given below, some crucial properties of rebars :-

1. It has high strength for making cost-effective design of RCC structures.
2. It has superior gripping with concrete i.e. good bonding.
3. Thermal expansion properties of rebar is well suited with concrete.
4. It has superior ductility to resist cyclic bonding (as for instance earthquake loading) or impact.
5. It has sound bendability useful for providing necessary shape to rebar to meet the demand of the structures.

6. It has superior weldability to simplify the process for reinforcement cage binding and saving of lap length.
7. It has powerful resistance strength to resist corrosion for greater longevity of R.C. structure.

The advantages of plain mild steel rebars :-

1. M.S bars can perform well in ductility, bendability, weldability and resisting corrosion.
2. Due to its low carbon content, M.S. rebars contains superior ductility property, yield strength and weldability property.
3. Due to its excellent corrosion resistance capacity, M.S. bars are considered as the best among all the steel rebars.
